Artpipes e.V. heads north for its next international Jazz installment. This highly anticipated project brings together award-winning Cologne based TRIA LINGVO and Manchester guitar virtuoso MIKE WALKER to present what is sure to be a reverie of sound in 2017. NORTH BY NORTHWEST unites leading musicians from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and the North-West region of England to create an especially unique concert experience for festivals and concert venues. TRIA LINGVO, winners of the 2014 Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis, offer a contemporary and innovative approach to the traditional trio format. At home with exploring the endlessly fascinating ground found between Modern Jazz and ethnic music, TRIA LINGVO - minus harmony instrument - provides an excellent platform for new musical encounters.

MIKE WALKER is one of the most prolific British musicians of his generation with his talent widely acknowledged among notable international peers. WALKER has built a distinguished performing, composing and teaching career in the UK and Europe spanning almost fourty years, featuring international touring and many highly recognised collaborations. The perfect beginning for a musical encounter of the highest calibre. NORTH BY NORTHWEST offers a concert formation including new quartet music written for the collaboration, award-winning repertoire from the featured trio, plus Walker's guitar mastery.

Musical Esperanto of the highest standard” - Gitarre & Bass

One of Germany's most innovative and diversified Jazz trios” - Klaus Hübner Jazzpodium 3/2013

After four highly successful albums, Tria Lingvo is one of the most established ensembles on the German Jazz scene. This collective has notably matured over the years by giving numerous concerts throughout Germany, ranging from clubs to concert halls and occasional churches to important festivals such as Leverkusener Jazztage, Enjoy Jazz and Vive le Jazz. In 2014, the group was honoured with the highest and best endowed Jazz accolade in Germany, the Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis.

Tria Lingvo’s musical credo is best reflected in their band name, an Esperanto term meaning third language. The ensemble has built a wide and varied repertoire incorporating modern jazz elements and ethnic music to form a language of its own. The collective’s compositions continuously demonstrate both immense creativity and fantasy, as well as dense improvisation and interaction between the three highly-acclaimed musicians.

As a trio lacking a harmony instrument, the group provides an ideal platform for musical encounters. Tria Lingvo is always looking for new and innovative inspiration by inviting musical guests such as the internationally renowned Dominique Pifarély, Zoltan Lantos and Ramesh Shotham. Lemke, Nendza and Hillmann faithfully continue to follow their path, casting a spell on their audience in an entertaining and sophisticated way.

"Mike Walker's guitar playing is one of the greatest joys of British Jazz" - LondonJazz Blog 5/2010

“One of the most powerful jazz guitarists in Europe" - The Guardian 5/2008

“No repitition, no clichés, just sheer brilliance - beautifully composed and arranged. A damn fine guitarist and a damn fine album” - All About Jazz 8/2008

Hailing from Salford (1962), MIKE WALKER picked up his brother's guitar at age 16 to trace the lush chords that had originally caught his ear in early Joni Mitchell songs and Weather Report instrumentals. Influenced in many directions by a broad spectrum, WALKER has become noted for his creativity, diversity and flexibility in a number of settings. A long list of distinguished collaborators and esteemed colleagues who have all recognised the breadth and wealth of WALKER'S talent include Steve Swallow, Dave Holland, Steve Rodby, Palle Danielson, Arild Anderson, Peter Erskine, Adam Nussbaum, John Marshall, Bob Moses, Bill Frisell, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, Vince Mendoza, Mike Gibbs, Mark Anthony Turnage, Tal Farlow, Palle Mikkelborg, Mica Paris and Norma Winstone. He toured Europe and America, as well as recorded with the George Russell 'Living Time' Orchestra, with whom he was a member for 18 years.

His debut album 'Madhouse and the Whole Thing There' was released in 2008 to wide critical acclaim. WALKER was additionally commissioned by Manchester Jazz Festival to produce his suite 'Ropes' for Jazz Quintet and 22-piece orchestra, featuring Adam Nussbaum. The recorded version will be released in Autumn 2016. In addition to his heavy touring and teaching schedule, WALKER is currently well-known for his work with the trans-atlantic group 'The Impossible Gentlemen', which he co-leads with the brilliant British pianist Gwilym Simcock, also featuring Adam Nussbaum, Steve Swallow and most recently Steve Rodby (Pat Metheny's resident bassist). The group has just produced their third album with outstanding critical praise.
